About Pennsylvania State University
Pennsylvania State University, or PSU for short, is a state-related land-grant, space grant public research university located in the University Park area, which is an unincorporated community in Centre County, in the US state of Pennsylvania, sitting within the State College Metropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Centre County, mostly being situated within the borough of State College. Federally, University Park is part of Pennsylvania's 5th congressional district.
Penn State, as the university is also known, was founded in in February 1855, as a degree-granting institution, by act P.L. 46, No. 50 of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, under the name of the Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania. The university adopted its current name in 1953, when President Milton S. Eisenhower, brother of then U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower, changed the school's name to The Pennsylvania State University, since then, the institution constantly growing, being known today, among the ten largest public universities in the United States.
In addition to the University Park campus, which is the largest and most prestigious campus, PSU has other 23 campuses, spread throughout the state, including a virtual World Campus. The Penn State University Park campus is ranked in the top 15 nationally for public universities and is considered a "Public Ivy", having an enrollment of 44 00 students, the total enrollment at Penn State being of more than 84 000 students. The university offers a wide array of educational programs, through numerous academic divisions, the University Park campus housing 13 of its colleges, among which there are: College of Agricultural Sciences, College of Arts and Architecture, Penn State Dickinson School of Law, College of Information Sciences and Technology and the Graduate School.
Athletics
The athletic teams from PSU's University Park campus are known as the Penn State Nittany Lions, who compete in the NCAA Division I-A and in the Big Ten Conference for most sports, also participating in different conferences, such as the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) (men's volleyball), Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) (men's lacrosse), American Lacrosse conference (women's lacrosse), and American Collegiate Hockey Association (hockey). Over the years, the teams have won a total of 65 national collegiate team championships, of which 37 are NCAA, 2 are consensus Division I football titles, 6 are AIAW, 3 are USWLA, 1 WIBC, and 4 national titles in boxing, including 11 in men's soccer and one in wrestling in years prior to NCAA sponsorship.
